I have declared this week #MaskWeek as I will be unveiling a NHL goalie mask each day this week.
An empty feeling sits in the bottom of my stomach as the realization of this year’s Mask Week is nearing an end. As I begin to look forward I find myself asking myself what will next year bring? I’m sure there are surprises in store for all of us, including me.
In all seriousness #MaskWeek ended up taking on a life of its own and it is very likely to trend on Twitter with today’s mask (please help by including #MaskWeek in your tweets). Before we get to today’s unveiling let’s take a step back and recap the week that was #MaskWeek 2012:
- Day 1 – Carey Price’s ‘Concept’ Mask

Mask Week 2012 concludes with a bang as I present to you the psychedelic-mesmerizing-retro-collage that is Brent Johnson’s helmet for the Pittsburgh Penguins third uniforms.
Mask Week Instalment #4: Brent Johnson ~ Led Zeppelin Concert T-Shirt
Led Zeppelin themes have been staple of Johnny’s masks ever since our first collaboration.
The latest mask contains imagery inspired by a Led Zeppelin concert t-shirt. I blended this imagery into an integrated unit, then overlayed the dark and powder blue colours from the Pittsburgh Penguins’ third jerseys.

Mike Smith ~ Coyote II

I have declared this week #MaskWeek as I will be unveiling a NHL goalie mask each day this week.
The second mask for #MaskWeek belongs to the hottest goalie in the NHL right now – Mike Smith. Smitty was rewarded with 1st Star of the Week Award on Feb 13th as he recorded four wins in four starts, posting an incredible League-best 0.74 goals-against average and .975 save percentage.
The hot play has not subsided either, I believe Smitty has now won 9 consecutive starts!
Mask Week Instalment #2: Mike Smith ~ Coyote II Mask
At the beginning of the 2011-12 season, Smitty and I went with a bold new design for his new team the Phoenix Coyotes – if you haven’t seen the mask make sure to check it out. The mask played on the Coyote theme presenting Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote on the mask in a perspective never attempted on a goalie mask previously.
The new mask ‘Coyote II’ is a continuation on this theme, except on this one the unthinkable happens…

Carey Price has been wearing the ‘Cowboy’ mask I created for him for over two years. Over those two years we spent a lot of creative energy on very well known pieces:
The common thread with all of these masks though is that they were limited usage and would be put up for auction on LegendsDepot.com in support of various charities. Leaving Carey with the trusted (but aging) ‘Cowboy’ mask.
